whereW is the Weyl group, ρ is the Weyl vector, and the product is over all positive roots α. This is a special case of Weyl’s character formula which says that the character of a finite dimensional representation is equal to a sum similar to the left hand side divided by the product on the right hand side; for the 1-dimensional representation the character is 1 so the sum is equal to the product. The Weyl character formula looks rather like the other product formulas. This similarity was explained by Macdonald and Kac as follows. Macdonald observed that the Weyl denominator formula was just a statement about finite root systems, and generalized this to affine root systems, producing a collection of identities called the Macdonald identities. The Macdonald identity for the simplest affine root system is just the Jacobi triple product identity. Kac observed that the Macdonald identities were just the denominator formulas for the Kac-Moody algebras that he and Moody had discovered a few years before, and went on to prove a character formula for representations of these algebras generalizing the Weyl character formula. The Weyl-Kac denominator formula [12] for Kac-Moody algebras is

DEVELOPMENT IN STRING THEORY

The string theory is a fast moving subject, both physics wise and in the respect of mathematics. In order to keep up with the discipline it is important to move with new ideas which are being stressed. Here I wish to give extracts from new papers of ideas which I have recently found interesting. There are six papers which are involved: I ."Strings formulated directly in 4 dimensions " A. N...

Bulk viscous string cosmological models in Saez – Ballester theory of gravitation

Spatially homogeneous Bianchi type-II, VIII and IX anisotropic, as well as isotropic cosmological models can be obtained in a scalar tensor theory of gravitation proposed by Saez and Ballester (1986) when the source for energy momentum tensor is a bulk viscous fluid containing one-dimensional cosmic strings. All the models obtained and presented here are expanding, non-rotating and accelerating...

Strange quark matter attached to string cloud in general scalar tensor theory of gravitation

Bianchi type-VI0 space time with strange quark matter attached to string cloud in Nordtvedt [1] general scalar tensor theory of gravitation with the help of a special case proposed by Schwinger [2] is obtained. The field equations have been solved by using the anisotropy feature of the universe in the Bianchi type-VI0 space time. Some important features of the model, thus obtained, have been di...

In this exposition, I discuss several developments in the theory of vertex operator algebras, and I include motivation for the definition. This is a more detailed version of the talk I gave at the Conference on Lie Algebras, Vertex Operator Algebras and Their Applications. I thank Yi-Zhi Huang and Kailash Misra very much for organizing this conference. I would like to motivate the concept of ve...

Introduction to Sporadic Groups

This is an introduction to finite simple groups, in particular sporadic groups, intended for physicists. After a short review of group theory, we enumerate the 1 + 1 + 16 = 18 families of finite simple groups, as an introduction to the sporadic groups. These are described next, in three levels of increasing complexity, plus the six isolated “pariah” groups. The (old) five Mathieu groups make up...

Symmetries, Information and Monster Groups before and after the Big Bang

The Monster group, the biggest of the sporadic groups, is equipped with the highest known number of dimensions and symmetries. Taking into account variants of the Borsuk–Ulam theorem and a novel topological approach cast in a physical fashion that has the potential to be operationalized, the universe can be conceived as a lower-dimensional manifold encompassed in the Monster group. Our universe...
